Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Hyundai Kona has five trim levels: SE, SEL, N Line, Limited, and N. The SE brings great value for money, with remote keyless entry, 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic on/off headlights, power heated side mirrors, a rear window wiper, and LED daytime running lights.
The SEL model swaps in 17-inch wheels and roof rails, as well as various interior features. It also has a Convenience Package that adds, among other things, a power sunroof. The N Line has the same list of features, plus 18-inch alloy wheels and body-color side cladding. The Limited adds LED headlights and taillights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high-beams. The Kona N doesn't have a sunroof but comes with most of the same equipment as the Limited model, plus various high-performance body changes.
Engine (Power)
The SE and SEL both use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque and a continuously variable transmission with manual shifting. The N Line model has a 1.6-liter turbo engine with 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The N has a 2.0-liter engine with 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque and an eight-speed dual-clutch.
Performance
Any version of the 2023 Kona delivers a satisfying drive. The 2023 Kona N delivers the most power among the five trim levels, reaching 60 mph in only 4.8 seconds. However, Kona models with all-wheel drive also benefit from an upgraded independent rear suspension, and the manual shifting on the first two trims is just as comfortable as the two dual-clutch options.
Interior
The Kona SE comes with high-quality cloth seating and a 60/40-split rear seat, along with an 8-inch touchscreen and six-speaker Bluetooth-capable audio setup. One rear and two front USB ports come included, as do Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SEL with the Convenience Package, or higher trims, gets you the 10.25-inch touchscreen instead, plus wireless phone charging, an extra cabin storage compartment, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. Standard equipment on the SEL includes HD and satellite radio, Hyundai Bluelink, and an eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar support.
Try the N Line for everything on the SEL and Convenience Package, plus trim-exclusive sport cloth front seats and metallic sport pedals. The Limited also builds off the Convenience Package setup, adding a Harmon Kardon audio system, ambient interior lighting, and leather seating.
Safety Features
Hyundai has packed the Kona with a substantial bundle of safety features, including lane-keeping features, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, a backup camera, safe exit warning, a rear seat reminder system, and driver attention alert. The addition of blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert to the starting trim is new for 2023. The Limited adds cyclist detection, highway drive assist, rear parking sensors, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and an electronic parking brake.
